Gongsanseong is a mountain fortress overlooking the Geum River in Gongju, built to defend the Baekje kingdom's capital after it moved here from present-day Seoul in the 5th century. Walking the reconstructed fortress walls gives sweeping views over the river and city, and the grounds include several pavilions and gates that mark different points along the walls.

As one of the more substantial surviving traces of Baekje's second capital period, it's a natural pairing with the nearby royal tombs (including the Tomb of King Muryeong) and Baekje Cultural Land.
