Wai-O-Tapu is one of the most visually striking geothermal parks in the region, known for the vividly coloured Champagne Pool (orange-rimmed and steaming) and a network of boardwalks past craters, mud pools, and mineral terraces in shades of green, yellow, and orange from different dissolved minerals. The Lady Knox Geyser puts on a triggered (not natural) eruption at a fixed daily time, drawing a crowd beforehand.

Walking the full network of trails takes about 1.5-2 hours; the Champagne Pool alone is one of the most photographed geothermal features in New Zealand.
