Spalentor is the grandest surviving of Basel's medieval city gates, a twin-turreted stone gatehouse built around 1400 as part of the city's second ring of fortifications. Most of Basel's old walls and gates were demolished in the 19th century as the city expanded, which makes Spalentor, along with two smaller surviving gates, an unusually intact reminder of how thoroughly walled the medieval city was.

It's a quick stop rather than a destination in itself — worth combining with a walk through the nearby university quarter or a visit to the botanical garden just inside the gate, since there's no interior access and the appeal is mostly architectural.
