Fondation Beyeler

Getting around: The Fondation Beyeler is in Riehen, a suburb north of central Basel. Take tram 6 from Basel city center (around 20 minutes) directly to the Fondation Beyeler stop, or the 34 bus. It's an easy day trip from anywhere in Basel and there's no need for a car.
Hours: Open daily 10:00-18:00, with extended hours to 20:00 on Wednesdays; open on most public holidays. Check ahead as the collection occasionally closes rooms for exhibition changeovers.

The Fondation Beyeler is widely considered Switzerland's best modern art museum, housed in a low-slung Renzo Piano building set among gardens and a lily pond on the edge of Riehen. The core collection, assembled by dealers Ernst and Hildy Beyeler, is strong on Picasso, Rothko, Giacometti and Monet, and the building itself was designed so natural light and views of the surrounding parkland become part of the experience of looking at the art.

Beyond the permanent collection, the Fondation runs major temporary exhibitions that regularly draw international attention — these are usually the reason repeat visitors from Basel and beyond come back. The adjoining park, with its own sculptures and a view toward the Black Forest, is worth the walk even for people who only have moderate interest in the art itself.
