Morcote
Morcote is a narrow lakefront village on the southern tip of Lake Lugano, often cited as one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland — a strip of arcaded houses and a church tower reflected in the water, backed by a steep hillside. The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Sasso, reached by a long staircase above the village, has a frescoed interior and a terrace with one of the better lake views in the region, and the adjoining cemetery is unusually atmospheric, worth the climb on its own.
It's a small place with no headline attraction beyond itself — arriving by boat from Lugano, walking the lakefront, climbing to the church, and having lunch at a lakeside restaurant is the entire, sufficient itinerary. The Parco Scherrer, a small eclectic garden with pavilions collected from around the world by a Swiss businessman, adds an odd, worthwhile half-hour if time allows.
