Kintamani

natureculture
Recommended stay: 1 day
Getting around: Driver or scooter along the caldera rim road; coffee plantations and viewpoints are spread out.
Hours: No fixed hours; Mount Batur sunrise treks require a pre-dawn start (typically 3-4am departure) to reach the summit for sunrise.

Kintamani is the highland area around Mount Batur and Lake Batur. Come for sunrise volcano treks, crater views, hot springs, and visits to Penglipuran Village. Most travelers spend one day, often as a stop between Ubud and the north or east.

Penglipuran Village: Penglipuran is one of the few Balinese villages that has kept its traditional layout fully intact — a single straight central lane flanked by near-identical bamboo-and-thatch compounds, each with the same style of carved entrance gate, a template repeated because village custom (awig-awig) still governs how houses here can be built. The bamboo forest behind the village is a genuine local resource, not scenery — residents still harvest it for construction and craft, and a short walking path through it is one of the more peaceful stops on an otherwise packed Kintamani day trip. Because the whole village functions as a living site rather than a preserved-and-emptied one, it draws a different, calmer crowd than Bali's temple circuit.
