Inch Beach

Recommended stay: 1 day
Getting around: Inch Beach sits just off the N86 between Dingle town and Castlemaine, roughly a 20-minute drive from Dingle; a car is really the only practical way to reach it, and there's a large free car park right at the beach entrance.
Hours: The beach itself is open around the clock with no admission charge; the on-site café and any surf school hire desks generally keep daytime hours in season and may close or reduce hours in winter.

Inch Beach is a vast, four-mile sand spit curving out into Dingle Bay on the south side of the Dingle Peninsula, backed by dunes and the dramatic silhouette of the Slieve Mish Mountains. It's one of the best surf beaches in Ireland — the long, exposed strand catches consistent Atlantic swell and is popular with beginners and experienced surfers alike, with a surf school operating from the beach in season. The setting has also made it a recognisable filming location, most famously for parts of "Ryan's Daughter," and the beach's scale means it rarely feels crowded even on a busy summer day.

Beyond surfing, Inch is simply a spectacular place to walk, with the tide exposing an enormous stretch of firm sand and views across the bay to the Iveragh Peninsula and MacGillycuddy's Reeks in the distance. There's a car park with a small beachside café at the entrance to the spit, and horse riding along the sand is also offered locally. Swimming is possible but the beach is unpatrolled outside of peak season, and currents can be strong, so care is needed, especially near the tide's edge.

Inch Beach FAQs

Is Inch Beach good for beginner surfers?

Yes, it's one of Ireland's most popular beginner surf spots thanks to its gentle, consistent breaks, and a surf school on the beach offers lessons and board hire through the summer season.

Is it safe to swim at Inch Beach?

Swimming is possible but the beach is not consistently lifeguarded outside peak summer weekends, and rip currents can form, so it's best to swim only in calm conditions and stay aware of the tide.

Is there parking at Inch Beach?

Yes, there's a large car park at the beach entrance, generally free or with a small seasonal charge, right beside the café.

Can you drive onto the beach?

Driving is permitted on parts of the sand at certain times, but conditions vary and getting stuck in soft sand or a rising tide is a real risk, so it's generally safer to park in the designated car park.

What's the best time of year to visit?

Summer offers the warmest water and surf lessons in full swing, but the beach is also strikingly beautiful and much quieter in spring and autumn.
