Gili Trawangan

relaxationadventure
Recommended stay: 1 day
Getting around: Gili Trawangan is reached by public or fast boats from Bangsal harbor on Lombok (about 20-25 minutes) or directly from Bali's Padang Bai or Serangan harbors (roughly 1.5-2 hours by fast boat). No cars or motorbikes operate on the island — getting around is by foot, bicycle, or cidomo horse cart.
Hours: No fixed hours; boat services generally run 08:00-16:00 from Bali or Lombok

Trawangan is the largest and liveliest of the Gili islands, known for a beach party and bar scene that's louder than anything else in the trio, alongside genuinely good diving and snorkeling and a walkable perimeter road with a viewpoint hill on the island's south side. It draws a younger, more social crowd than Air or Meno.

Beyond the nightlife, the island has solid dive infrastructure with numerous PADI centers and easy access to reef sites and the chance to see sea turtles while snorkeling just off the beach — it's not purely a party destination even though that's its reputation.

Gili Trawangan FAQs

Is Gili Trawangan mostly about partying?

It has the most active nightlife of the three Gilis, but it's also a legitimate diving hub with strong reef access and turtle sightings, so it works for both crowds.

Can I see sea turtles here?

Yes, turtles are commonly spotted snorkeling just off the northeast coast of the island, no boat trip required.

How do I get around the island?

On foot, rented bicycle, or cidomo horse cart — same as the other Gilis, no motorized vehicles allowed.

Is Trawangan good for a day trip from Lombok or Bali?

It's doable from Lombok given the short boat ride, but from Bali the travel time eats a large chunk of the day, so an overnight stay is more common.

What's the viewpoint hill on the island?

A small hill on the southeast side of Trawangan offering a sunset view over the water toward Bali's Mount Agung on clear days, a popular short walk from the main strip.
