Cu Chi Tunnels

Getting around: About 40-70km northwest of central Ho Chi Minh City depending on which section you visit (Ben Duoc or Ben Dinh) — roughly 1.5-2 hours by road, usually visited as a half-day or full-day organized tour.
Hours: Typically open daily, roughly 7am-5pm.

Cu Chi Tunnels is a section of the vast underground tunnel network used by Viet Cong fighters during the American War, now preserved (and in places widened for tourist access) as a historical site with sample tunnel sections, hidden trapdoor demonstrations, and displays of the improvised booby traps used against enemy soldiers. There's also a working shooting range where visitors can fire period weapons for an additional fee, which some find at odds with the site's otherwise somber subject matter.

There are two main visitor sections — Ben Dinh, closer to the city and more commonly visited on standard tours, and Ben Duoc, further out and generally considered slightly less crowded and more preserved — both giving a visceral, if partly reconstructed, sense of the scale and ingenuity of the tunnel network.

Cu Chi Tunnels FAQs

Ben Dinh or Ben Duoc — which section should I visit?

Ben Dinh is closer and more commonly included on standard half-day tours; Ben Duoc is a bit further but sees fewer crowds — either gives a similar experience.

Are the tunnels claustrophobic?

Yes, they're narrow and low even after being widened for tourists; if you're claustrophobic, you can skip the crawl-through sections and still see the rest of the site.

Is the shooting range worth doing?

It's optional and separately priced — some visitors find it an interesting (if jarring) add-on, others prefer to skip it given the site's historical context.

Is this an appropriate day trip for kids?

It can be intense given the war-related content and displays of booby traps, so use judgment based on your children's age and sensitivity.

How long does a typical tour take?

Half-day tours from Ho Chi Minh City, including transport, generally run about 4-5 hours total.
