Chuncheon

Recommended stay: 2 days
Getting around: Chuncheon is directly connected to Seoul by the ITX-Cheongchun express train (about an hour from Yongsan/Cheongnyangni) and by subway (Gyeongchun Line), both simple to use without a car. Within the city, Namiseom Wharf (for the Nami Island ferry) and Gangchon are short bus or taxi rides from Chuncheon Station; a bike-rental circuit around Uiam Lake is a popular way to spend a few hours.
Hours: The small ferry to Nami Island departs frequently through the day from Gapyeong-side or Chuncheon-side piers, but stops running in the evening, so plan the crossing with enough daylight to explore before the last boat back.

Chuncheon is the capital of Gangwon-do province and a lakeside city built around a set of dammed reservoirs (Uiam, Soyang) that give it a notably different feel from Korea's coastal or mountain-valley towns. It's best known nationally for dak-galbi, a spicy stir-fried chicken dish invented here and now sold in dedicated "dak-galbi streets" downtown, and makguksu, a buckwheat noodle dish that pairs with it.

It's also the main access point for Nami Island (technically closer to Gapyeong but commonly reached via Chuncheon-area transport too) and for Gangchon, a small resort town nearby known for cycling and rail-bike routes along the old rail line. Soyang Dam, one of Asia's largest, offers boat cruises into the Gangwon mountains toward the temple of Cheongpyeongsa. Chuncheon works well as either a standalone weekend trip from Seoul or a stop en route to Gangwon's mountain and coastal areas.
