Capileira is the uppermost of the three stacked Alpujarra villages (above Pampaneira and Bubión) and the standard jumping-off point for hikes into the Sierra Nevada, including the long approach to Mulhacén, mainland Spain's highest peak. It has the same Berber-derived flat-roofed architecture as its neighbors but a slightly more rugged, mountain-outpost feel given its altitude and position at the literal end of the paved road.
