Bubión

Recommended stay: 1 day
Getting around: Bubión has no real internal transport needs — it's tiny and walkable in minutes — but getting there requires a car or the limited local bus from Granada, since it sits high in the Alpujarras on a winding mountain road. It's commonly visited alongside its two neighboring villages, Pampaneira (below it) and Capileira (just above), connected by a short, scenic drive or a doable walking trail between them.
Hours: There are no major ticketed sights with fixed hours here — the appeal is the village itself and the surrounding hiking trails — but note that mountain weather can close trails or make driving the access road unpleasant in poor conditions, especially in winter.

Bubión is one of three white Alpujarran villages stacked up a mountainside (with Pampaneira below and Capileira above) in the Sierra Nevada foothills south of Granada, built in a distinctive Berber-influenced architectural style — flat-roofed, terraced houses with chimneys called 'ginillos' — brought by refugees from the Alpujarran rebellions centuries ago. It's quieter and less visited by day-trippers than Pampaneira, which makes it a better choice if you want to actually stay overnight and hike rather than just pass through on a bus tour.

Bubión FAQs

Which of the three Alpujarra villages should I stay in?

Bubión is a good middle choice — quieter than Pampaneira's day-trip crowds, with easier access than Capileira further up.

Do I need a car to visit?

Effectively yes; there's limited bus service from Granada but a car gives you the freedom to see all three villages and the hiking trails properly.

What is there to do besides walk around?

Hiking trails into the Sierra Nevada, including routes toward Mulhacén, the highest peak in mainland Spain, along with local weaving and craft shops.

How far is Bubión from Granada?

About an hour and a half by car on mountain roads.

Is it worth visiting in winter?

Yes, it's atmospheric with snow on the peaks above, but check road conditions since routes can be affected by weather.
