Blandy's Wine Lodge
Blandy's Wine Lodge is the historic home of one of Madeira's oldest wine producers, housed in a former Franciscan monastery in central Funchal. Guided tours walk through the aging cellars, where Madeira wine is matured using the traditional canteiro method — slow heat-aging in wooden casks that gives the wine its distinctive caramelized character — followed by a tasting of several styles, from dry to sweet.
Madeira wine is fortified and famously long-lived (bottles a century old are still drinkable), and the lodge does a good job explaining why the production process here is so different from table wine elsewhere. It's a compact, easy stop to fit into a day exploring central Funchal.
