Ayder

natureadventurerelaxation
Recommended stay: 2 days
Getting around: Reached by car from Rize or Trabzon (roughly 2-2.5 hours from Trabzon Airport, the nearest major airport); a car or organized tour is essential given the winding mountain roads, and minibuses also run seasonally from Rize/Pazar to Ayder.
Hours: The plateau and trails are accessible during daylight hours; the thermal baths generally keep set daily hours, and access can be limited or the road affected by snow in winter, so check current conditions before visiting.

Ayder is a high alpine plateau in the Kaçkar Mountains above the Black Sea coast near Rize, and it's one of the most dramatic landscapes in Turkey: steep green valleys, waterfalls, and wooden highland houses (yaylas) set against the jagged, often snow-capped Kaçkar peaks. The plateau is famous for its thermal springs, its misty, cloud-wrapped scenery, and its role as a summer highland retreat, historically used by local Hemşin and Laz communities for grazing livestock and now increasingly for tourism. Traditional wooden houses on stilts still dot the hillsides, many now converted into guesthouses.

Ayder is primarily a base for outdoor activity: hiking into the Kaçkar Mountains National Park, visiting nearby waterfalls, soaking in the thermal baths, and simply absorbing the cool, green, waterfall-strewn scenery so different from typical images of Turkey. The Fırtına Valley drive up to Ayder is itself considered one of the most scenic mountain roads in the country, winding along a roaring river gorge past old stone Ottoman-era bridges.
