Ağva
Ağva is a small riverside town on the Black Sea coast, roughly two hours from Istanbul, built where the Yeşilçay and Göksu rivers meet the sea. It's become one of Istanbul's favorite weekend escapes precisely because it feels so different from the city: quiet, green, and slow-paced, with wooden riverside restaurants, small boutique guesthouses converted from old village houses, and forested hills rolling down to sandy river mouths and a wide, mostly empty beach. Rowing or kayaking up the rivers under overhanging trees is the town's signature activity, along with simply eating fresh fish or trout at a riverside table.
Ägva doesn't have major historic monuments — its appeal is entirely about atmosphere and pace. It's popular for honeymoons and romantic getaways among Istanbul residents, and weekends can get busy with day-trippers, but midweek it's genuinely peaceful. The surrounding countryside, thick with pine and beech forest, also offers modest hiking and picnicking opportunities away from the town center.
