Vinh Moc Tunnels

Getting around: About 100km north of Hue, near Ben Hai River in Quang Tri province — roughly 2-2.5 hours by car, usually visited as part of a full-day DMZ tour from Hue.
Hours: Typically open daily, roughly 7am-5pm.

Vinh Moc is a network of underground tunnels built by an entire coastal village to shelter from heavy American bombing during the war, and unlike the more famous but partly reconstructed Cu Chi Tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City, Vinh Moc's tunnels are largely original and were used to house whole families — including births that took place underground — for extended periods rather than just as military infrastructure. The tunnels are also taller and less claustrophobic than Cu Chi's, making them more accessible to walk through.

It's considered by many visitors and historians a more authentic and moving site than Cu Chi precisely because it wasn't a fighting position but a literal underground village, and the museum and preserved tunnel sections do a good job conveying what daily life looked like for the families who sheltered there.

Vinh Moc Tunnels FAQs

How does this compare to the Cu Chi Tunnels near Saigon?

Vinh Moc's tunnels are largely original (not widened or reconstructed for tourism) and taller, and were used to shelter an entire civilian village rather than functioning primarily as military infrastructure — many find it a more authentic and moving experience.

Are the tunnels claustrophobic?

Less so than Cu Chi's, since they were built taller to accommodate families living in them, though they're still underground tunnels and narrow in places.

Is it usually combined with other DMZ sites?

Yes, it's typically included on a full-day DMZ tour from Hue alongside Ben Hai River and sometimes Quang Tri Citadel.

Is there an entrance fee?

Yes, a standard entrance fee applies, including access to the small on-site museum.

How long does a visit take?

45 minutes to an hour to walk through the tunnels and museum.
