Stegastein is a cantilevered wooden viewing platform jutting 30 metres out from the mountainside, 650 metres above Aurlandsfjord, giving an almost vertigo-inducing look straight down at the water below and across to the peaks opposite. The architecture of the platform itself - glass-railed, seemingly unsupported at its outer end - is as much a draw as the view.

It's a quick stop rather than a hiking destination: park, walk out onto the platform, take in the view, and continue - though the drive up the switchbacked road to reach it is part of the experience in its own right.
