Sierra Nevada

Recommended stay: 1 day
Getting around: About an hour from Granada by car or the seasonal ski bus that runs from the city center to the Pradollano resort area; no train access.
Hours: The ski resort operates seasonally, roughly late November through April depending on snow, with lift hours typically 09:00-17:00; hiking trails in summer are accessible during daylight hours without a fixed schedule.

The Sierra Nevada is the mountain range visible from Granada's viewpoints, home to mainland Spain's highest peak (Mulhacén) and, in winter, one of Europe's southernmost ski resorts, an unusual combination given its proximity to the Mediterranean coast and Granada's mild climate. In winter it draws skiers for day trips or short stays; in summer the same slopes become hiking and mountain-biking terrain with alpine scenery.

Unlike most POIs near Granada, a trip here can reasonably justify an overnight, especially for skiing (given lift ticket cost and short winter daylight) or a serious multi-day hike toward the higher peaks. A shorter day trip from Granada is entirely feasible for a taste of the mountains, a scenic drive, or a single day on the slopes.

Sierra Nevada FAQs

Can I ski and visit Granada's historic sites in the same trip?

Yes, it's a popular combination since the resort is only about an hour from the city, unusual for pairing skiing with Moorish architecture and a Mediterranean-adjacent climate.

What's the ski season?

Roughly late November through April, weather dependent, making it one of the latest-running ski seasons in Europe.

Do I need a car to get there?

A car is easiest, but a seasonal bus service runs from Granada to the Pradollano resort during ski season.

Is it worth visiting outside ski season?

Yes, for hiking and mountain scenery in summer, though it's a much quieter, less amenity-rich experience than winter.

How high is the highest peak?

Mulhacen reaches about 3,479 meters, the highest point on the Iberian Peninsula outside the Canary Islands.
