Sanmachi Suji
Sanmachi Suji is Takayama's beautifully preserved old town district, its narrow streets lined with dark wooden merchant houses dating largely to the Edo period, many now housing sake breweries, craft shops, and cafes. Several breweries offer tastings, identifiable by the large cedar balls (sugidama) hung outside marking a new batch of sake.
It's consistently rated among Japan's best-preserved historic townscapes, and simply walking the streets, sampling sake, and browsing craft shops makes for one of the most pleasant, low-key experiences in the region.
