Riserva dello Zingaro is a protected nature reserve along a rugged, undeveloped stretch of coastline, established in 1981 as Sicily's first nature reserve after local activism blocked a planned coastal road through the area. Trails wind along cliffs and down to a series of secluded coves with clear water, some sandy, some pebbly.
Unlike much of Sicily's more built-up coast, there's no road access directly to the coves; reaching them requires walking in from one of the reserve's two entrances, which keeps the beaches relatively uncrowded even in peak summer.
Given the driving distance from Palermo and the walking required once inside, this is best planned as a half-day to full-day outing rather than a quick stop, ideally with swimwear and water for the trail.
