Rantasalmi
Rantasalmi is a small lake-district town whose main significance is as a gateway to Linnansaari National Park, an archipelago of forested islands in Lake Saimaa that's one of the best places in the world to spot the Saimaa ringed seal, a critically endangered freshwater seal subspecies found only in this lake system. Guided boat tours from the area offer a realistic (though never guaranteed) chance of seeing the seals in a way that's much harder from Savonlinna itself.
Outside the park, the town is a modest, quiet base rather than a sightseeing destination — most visitors are here specifically for the national park and lake.
