Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a river-island bird sanctuary on the Kaveri River, one of the best places in South India to see nesting colonies of storks, herons, ibises, and other waterbirds at close range from a boat. Crocodiles are also commonly spotted basking along the riverbanks during the boat ride.

The standard way to explore is a short guided boat ride around the islands, which gets close enough to nesting colonies for good photography without disturbing the birds significantly. It's an easy, worthwhile half-day trip from Mysore, particularly rewarding during the breeding season from roughly June to November.
