The Portico di San Luca is the longest continuous portico in the world, stretching nearly 3.8 kilometers and 666 arches from the city gate at Porta Saragozza up to the hilltop Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca. It was built between 1674 and 1793 specifically to give pilgrims a covered, sheltered path up the hill.
Walking its full length is a genuine uphill hike, gaining roughly 200 meters of elevation, but it's shaded and dry regardless of weather, which is part of its original purpose. The sanctuary at the top rewards the climb with sweeping views over Bologna and the surrounding hills.
