Pilot Bay

Getting around: On the harbour side of Mount Maunganui, an easy walk from the town centre, opposite the ocean-facing Main Beach.
Hours: No fixed hours — open access at all times.

Pilot Bay is the calm, harbour-side counterpart to Mount Maunganui's ocean-facing Main Beach, sheltered and generally much calmer water making it popular for swimming with young children, paddleboarding, and kayaking. It sits at the base of Mauao on the harbour side, with views across to Tauranga's port and city.

It's the go-to option if the ocean side is too rough, or simply for a calmer, more sheltered swim or paddle.

Is it walkable from town?

Yes, it's an easy walk from Mount Maunganui's town centre.

What's the view like?

Views across the harbour to Tauranga's port and city skyline.

Is it patrolled by lifeguards?

Patrol presence is generally lighter here than at the main ocean beach given the calmer conditions, but check current signage.
