Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary

Getting around: About 60-65km southwest of Ahmedabad, roughly 1.5 hours by road. Best reached by car or taxi; boat rides on the lake are arranged on-site by local boatmen.
Hours: Open daily, roughly 6:30am to 6:30pm; best visited early morning or late afternoon when birds are most active. The sanctuary is most rewarding during the winter migratory season, roughly November through February.

Nal Sarovar is Gujarat's largest wetland bird sanctuary, a shallow lake that hosts tens of thousands of migratory birds during winter, flamingos, pelicans, cranes, and numerous waterfowl species arriving from Central Asia and Siberia. Outside the winter migration window, the birdlife thins out considerably, so timing the visit matters more here than at most sites.

The standard way to see the sanctuary is a small boat ride out onto the lake with a local boatman, which gets you close to the bird colonies without disturbing them too much. It's a straightforward half-day trip from Ahmedabad, best done as an early-morning outing when both temperatures and bird activity are at their best.

How long does a visit take?
