Nagamachi is Kanazawa's former samurai district, where mid- and lower-ranking retainers of the Maeda clan once lived. Its narrow lanes are lined with earthen walls and wooden gates that have survived largely intact, giving a strong sense of Edo-period residential architecture without the crowds of some other historic districts.

The Nomura House, a restored samurai residence with a small garden, is the main paid attraction within the district and gives access to an actual historic interior rather than just the exterior streetscape.
