Atatürk Alanı
Atatürk Alanı, usually just called Meydan, is Trabzon's central square and the social heart of the city — a shaded, tree-lined plaza ringed by cafés, tea gardens, and some of Trabzon's oldest surviving buildings. It's less a monument than a living space: locals gather here at all hours to drink tea, students meet between classes, and in the evening the surrounding streets fill with vendors and foot traffic. The square takes its name from the statue of Atatürk at its center and has functioned as Trabzon's civic gathering point since the early republican era.
For visitors, Meydan is a useful orientation point and a good place to get a feel for everyday Black Sea coastal life rather than a sight to tick off. The streets radiating from it lead to the bazaar district, historic hans (caravanserais), and mosques, making it a natural base for exploring on foot. It's also simply one of the most pleasant places in the city to sit with a glass of Rize tea and watch Trabzon go about its day.
