Kyteler's Inn
Kyteler's Inn is one of Kilkenny's oldest pubs, occupying a building dating to the 13th century that was once the home of Dame Alice Kyteler, a wealthy woman accused of witchcraft in 1324 in what became one of Ireland's most notorious medieval witch trials. Kyteler herself fled the country before she could be tried, but her maid, Petronilla de Meath, was flogged and burned at the stake in her place — one of the earliest recorded executions for witchcraft in Europe.
Today it operates as a lively pub and restaurant on Kilkenny's Medieval Mile, trading on that dark history with a suitably atmospheric interior of stone walls and low beams, alongside regular live music. It's as much a heritage curiosity as a place to eat and drink, and a natural stop while exploring the city centre.
