Thailand's vast northeastern plateau, sharing borders with Laos and Cambodia. It's the agricultural heartland, known for its spicy, pungent cuisine (som tam, larb, sticky rice), ancient Khmer temple ruins like Phimai and Phanom Rung, and vibrant rocket festivals. Culturally, it's a Lao-speaking region with a deeply rural, traditional rhythm. It's the most budget-friendly part of Thailand and sees few foreign tourists outside of its rising cities.

Udon Thani: A sprawling northeastern city and one of Isaan's main commercial hubs, with a large Vietnamese-Thai community and a notable expat presence. The main draw is proximity to the Ban Chiang archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage site with evidence of a prehistoric Bronze Age culture. The city itself offers a vibrant night market, the large Nong Prajak Park, and the stunning Wat Pa Phu Kon temple complex in the forested mountains a couple of hours away. It's an authentic slice of urban Isaan life.
