Hwaseong Fortress

Getting around: From central Suwon, walk or take a short bus/taxi ride to the fortress area; Suwon Station connects via local bus (about 15-20 minutes) to the main fortress entrances.
Hours: Grounds generally accessible anytime for wall walking; specific gate structures and museum sections typically open 9am-6pm.

Hwaseong is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Korea's best-preserved fortress walls, built in the late 18th century by King Jeongjo of Joseon, combining traditional Korean fortress design with then-cutting-edge construction techniques and materials informed by contemporary Chinese and Western engineering knowledge. The roughly 5.7-kilometer wall circuit, still largely intact, can be walked in full, passing gates, guard towers, and command posts along the way, with a small train also available for those not wanting to walk the entire loop.

The fortress was built partly out of King Jeongjo's devotion to his father, whose tragic death (Jeongjo's father was killed by his own father, King Yeongjo, in a notorious incident) and the king's broader reformist political ambitions, giving the site notable historical depth beyond its impressive engineering.
