Hiroshima Castle, also called Carp Castle, was originally built in the 1590s by Mori Terumoto and served as a regional power center for centuries before being destroyed in the 1945 atomic bombing. The current keep is a 1958 concrete reconstruction housing a museum on the castle's and city's samurai-era history.

The surrounding moat and stone walls, along with a shrine on the grounds, make for a pleasant walk even for visitors who skip the museum inside the keep.
