Gap of Dunloe
The Gap of Dunloe is a narrow mountain pass carved by glaciers between the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and Purple Mountain, just outside Killarney, and it's one of the most dramatic short drives — or, better, walks — in Ireland. A single winding road threads through the pass past a chain of small lakes, with rugged mountain walls rising steeply on either side; traditionally, and still today, many visitors do it by pony and trap or on foot rather than by car, since the road is narrow and, in peak season, congested with foot and horse traffic.
It's often combined with a boat trip across the Lakes of Killarney to Lord Brandon's Cottage on the far side, making a popular full loop that pairs the mountain scenery of the Gap with the wooded lake scenery of Killarney National Park. It's genuinely one of Kerry's best-known scenic set pieces, and it earns the reputation.
Gap of Dunloe FAQs
Technically yes outside peak times, but the road is narrow and often busy with pony traps, cyclists and walkers in summer, so many visitors choose to walk, cycle, or take a pony trap instead.
A common route is by pony and trap or on foot/bike through the Gap, followed by a boat crossing on the Lakes of Killarney back to town.
The full walk through the Gap takes around 2 to 3 hours one way, depending on pace and stops.
About 20 minutes by car, though most visitors book a tour rather than self-drive due to the narrow road.
Walking the full route is moderately demanding due to length and gradient, but pony and trap options make the scenery accessible to those who prefer not to walk it all.
