Fira Cable Car

Getting around: At the northern edge of Fira, connecting the clifftop town to the old port (Skala) below; the cable car station is a short walk from the main square.
Hours: Typically operates daily, roughly 7am-9pm or later in peak season with shorter winter hours, departing every few minutes; can pause briefly in high winds.

A cable car covering the roughly 200-meter vertical drop between Fira and the old port at the base of the caldera cliffs in about three minutes, built as the faster, less strenuous alternative to walking (or riding a donkey) down the zigzagging path cut into the cliff face. Most cruise ship passengers arriving at the old port use it to reach Fira, which means lines can build quickly when ships are in.

The views during the short ride are genuinely spectacular, taking in the full sweep of the caldera, and it's worth doing even without a specific reason to be at the port, just for the perspective on Santorini's volcanic cliffs.

The donkey and mule path remains as the traditional (and free, aside from a tip if you use an animal) alternative, though animal welfare concerns have made the cable car increasingly the recommended choice.

Fira Cable Car FAQs

How long does the cable car ride take?

About 3 minutes each way, covering roughly 200 vertical meters.

What's the alternative to the cable car?

A zigzag stone path down the cliff, walkable on foot or historically by donkey, though donkey rides have drawn animal welfare criticism and the cable car is generally the recommended option.

Does it get crowded?

Yes, especially when cruise ships are docked at the old port, since most passengers use it to reach Fira; lines can be long at peak times.

Is it worth riding just for the view, without going to the port?

Yes, many visitors ride it purely for the caldera views during the short trip, then walk back or ride back up.

Does it operate in bad weather?

It can pause temporarily in high winds, which are not uncommon on Santorini's exposed clifftop.
