Dune du Pilat
The Dune du Pilat is Europe's tallest sand dune, currently around 100-110 meters high (its height and shape shift year to year as wind moves the sand) and stretching nearly three kilometers along the Atlantic coast near Arcachon. Climbing it, whether by the wooden staircase or straight up the sand, opens onto a genuinely surprising view: the Bay of Arcachon and its oyster beds on one side, and the dense Landes pine forest running unbroken to the horizon on the other.
This is technically a day trip from Bordeaux rather than a city-adjacent stop, given the drive, but it's commonly paired with time in Bordeaux and is worth the detour for the scale of the landscape alone. Go early or late in the day in summer — midday heat on open sand with no shade is genuinely uncomfortable, and the main staircase gets crowded.
