Chania Lighthouse

Getting around: At the far end of the harbor breakwater; walk along the harbor front from the Old Town and out along the stone breakwater, about a 20-25 minute walk each way from the inner harbor.
Hours: The breakwater and lighthouse exterior are accessible at any time; there's no ticketed entry since it's a functioning navigational structure, not a museum.

A Venetian-built (later Egyptian-rebuilt) lighthouse standing at the tip of the long breakwater enclosing Chania's harbor, and one of the most recognizable images of the city — its minaret-like upper section is a legacy of the Egyptian reconstruction in the 1830s-40s, when Crete was briefly under Egyptian administration. Walking the full length of the breakwater out to it gives a view back over the harbor and Old Town that's hard to get anywhere else, especially at sunset.

It's not a building you enter; the appeal is the walk itself and the framing it gives of the waterfront skyline, with the domed mosque and Venetian buildings lining the harbor behind you.

The breakwater has no shade and can be windy, so it's more pleasant in the cooler parts of the day than at midday in summer.

Chania Lighthouse FAQs

Can I go inside the lighthouse?

No, it's a functioning navigational structure and not open to the public for interior visits.

How long is the walk out to it?

About 20-25 minutes each way along the breakwater from the inner harbor, depending on your pace.

Is it a good sunset spot?

Yes, it's one of the most popular sunset viewpoints in Chania, looking back across the harbor toward the Old Town.

Is the walk suitable for strollers or wheelchairs?

The breakwater surface is uneven stone in parts and exposed to wind, so it's manageable but not the smoothest walk for wheels.

Is there anything to do out there besides look at the lighthouse?

Not much beyond the view and photos — it's a there-and-back walk rather than a site with facilities.
