Caldeira Velha
Caldeira Velha is a natural hot spring and waterfall set in dense forest on the slopes of the Fogo volcano, where mineral-rich, slightly warm water collects in a series of pools fed by a small cascade. The iron content gives the water and surrounding rocks a distinct reddish-orange tint, and the setting — thick, humid subtropical forest wrapped around the pools — feels distinctly volcanic and Azorean.
It's one of the more accessible and picturesque hot springs on São Miguel, smaller and less developed than the thermal pools in Furnas, and popular as a stop on the way to or from Lagoa do Fogo. Swimwear is required and there are basic changing facilities on site.
