Getting around: Byron Bay's town centre is walkable, and a lot of the beaches (Main Beach, Clarkes Beach, Wategos) are within walking or short cycling distance of the centre, with bike hire widely available. To reach the lighthouse, Suffolk Park or the hinterland towns (Bangalow, Nimbin) you'll want a car, since the local bus network is limited. Byron itself has no train station any more — the nearest airport is Ballina/Byron Gateway, about 30 minutes south, or Gold Coast Airport around an hour north.
Hours: Cape Byron Lighthouse and its walking track are open daily from before dawn; the lighthouse precinct itself opens around 8am, and sunrise from the headland (Australia's easternmost point) is the reason most people get up early.

Byron Bay built its reputation on surf culture and alternative living in the 1970s and never entirely shook off either, even as it's become one of the more expensive and heavily touristed small towns in Australia. It's still a legitimately good surf town — Main Beach and The Pass are beginner-friendly, Wategos and Belongil suit more experienced surfers — and the walk out to Cape Byron Lighthouse, Australia's easternmost point, is worth doing at sunrise for the whale-watching (June-November) as much as the view.

The town itself has leaned hard into wellness tourism and boutique everything — yoga studios, juice bars, designer homewares stores — which locals have mixed feelings about, since it's pushed prices up and made Byron feel different from the backpacker town it was twenty years ago. It's still worth a visit for the beaches and the surrounding hinterland, but go in with the expectation of a resort-town price tag rather than a sleepy coastal escape.

The hinterland towns nearby — Bangalow (upmarket, boutique shopping), Nimbin (the old counterculture holdout, still worth a look for its 1970s hippie-commune history) and the Northern Rivers more broadly — are easy add-ons if you have a car.
