Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière

Getting around: Atop Fourvière hill overlooking Vieux Lyon; reachable by the funicular from Vieux Lyon (a couple of minutes) or a steep 20-minute walk up.
Hours: Open daily, generally around 8am-7pm (extended in summer); the crypt keeps shorter hours and closes for a midday period in some seasons.

The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is a lavish late-19th-century church built on the hill above Lyon in thanks for the city being spared during the Franco-Prussian War, and its ornate, almost overloaded interior of mosaics, marble, and gilding is deliberately different from the basilica's more austere Romanesque-Byzantine exterior. It sits on a site with much older religious significance, on the hill where Roman Lugdunum was founded.

The main reason to make the trip up, beyond the basilica itself, is the terrace outside it: one of the best panoramic views over Lyon, the Saône and Rhône rivers, and on clear days the distant Alps. The funicular from Vieux Lyon makes the ascent easy and is part of the experience rather than just transport.

Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière FAQs

Is it worth the trip mainly for the view or the basilica?

Both work — the view from the terrace is genuinely one of the best in Lyon, and the interior decoration is striking even if you're not especially interested in church architecture.

How do you get up the hill?

The funicular (part of the TCL transit system) from Vieux Lyon is the easiest way; there's also a steep walking path for those who prefer it.

Is entry free?

The basilica itself is generally free to enter; the crypt and any museum areas may have separate access or hours.

Can you go up the towers?

Limited tower access is sometimes offered for further views, though this varies and isn't always available — check on arrival.

How long should I plan?

About an hour including the funicular ride, the interior, and time on the terrace.
