Balmoral Castle
Balmoral has been the Royal Family's private Scottish estate since Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bought it in 1852, and it remains a working residence — this is where Queen Elizabeth II spent her final days in September 2022. Only the ballroom and gardens are open to visitors, and only for a limited window in spring and summer, since the family uses the castle itself for much of the year; the exterior, with its granite turrets and Scots Baronial style, has become one of the most recognisable royal images in the country.
What you actually get on a visit is more grounds-and-atmosphere than palace tour: formal gardens, walking trails through the Deeside estate, a small exhibition in the ballroom on royal life at Balmoral, and views over the River Dee and the surrounding Cairngorms hills that explain why the family kept coming back for 170-plus years. It's less about lavish interiors and more about standing on ground with genuine, ongoing royal history.
